4. Question: I just now have my first missed period but the pregnancy test is still negative? Am I pregnant
Answer: This is a good question – and it is possible that you are still pregnant! However, there are a number of possible explanations and we’ll review these below!First, let’s assume you are pregnant. Some pregnancy tests are less sensitive than others. With our 20mIU pregnancy tests, you can typically detect pregnancy before a missed period. That said, a diluted urine sample or too-frequent urination prior to testing can delay your first positive result. Ironically, an early pregnancy sign is frequent urination. Before taking a test, try to “hold” your urine as long as possible so the pregnancy hormone, hCG, can accumulate in your urine. For tips to optimize early detection, click here.
Secondly, it is also possible that ovulation was late this month or that the implantation date signaling a pregnancy occurred later than average as well. These two events can delay a positive result, as can a relatively slow rate of hCG production.
Now, if you are not pregnant and you have an irregular cycle, it may also be the case that you are simply late – and not pregnant. You can determine cycle regularity by starting to fertility chart and staying in touch with your doctor. Last but not least, if you do miss a period and experience negative pregnancy tests, you should discuss this matter with your doctor.
