Mercury-Free Glass Basal Thermometer - accurate, safe, and environmentally friendly

Want a safe, nature-friendly, and extremely accurate alternative to a mercury basal thermometer? Then look no further than the singular Fairhaven Health Glass Basal Thermometer. Its an ultra-accurate, non-toxic alternative to mercury thermometers that is designed specifically for bbt charting.

As you likely know, concerns about mercury have been featured in the news frequently of late. Many states are pulling mercury thermometers from the shelf due to toxicity and related health hazards, particularly for pregnant and trying-to-conceive women.

The Fairhaven Health Mercury-Free Glass Basal Thermometer does not contain a single drop of mercury and is certified accurate. Instead, the thermometer contains a safe liquid alloy substance. It even comes with a no-break carrying case that acts as a magnifying lens so you can read your basal temperature and fertility chart with precision.

You'll receive your Fairhaven Health Mercury-Free Glass Basal Thermometer in discreet packaging with no external indication of the contents (we use the return address of ONLINE STORE) - Click Here to see an example of our packaging). Very sensitive thermometer
May 31, 2014
I am using this thermometer for testing my thyroid function using my basal temperature in the AM. It has large numbers and is very sensitive to variations in temperature. Sometimes the reading is a little hard to read because the line is very thin, but otherwise, it's a great thermometer.

Better than digital thermometers
February 26, 2014
I've been using this thermometer for over 2 months and like the performance. A lot of people seem to mention problems with the glass breaking, well, I'm not sure how toxic the plastics used in digital thermometers are, but I'll take the risk of broken glass over the risk and instability of digitals any day. I am going to buy an extra backup one, just in case. As far as 'shaking down' the temp. well, I never could get the hang of that, but someone on another website suggested putting it into the toe of a clean (lightweight) sock and spinning like a propeller. This works perfectly but you have to be careful because if it bangs against anything it could break. I wait 5 minutes to make sure the temp has stabilized, and sterilize it with alcohol.
Pros:
It is more accurate than my digital one, I tried them both simultaneously for a few days (new battery in the digital one) and discovered the digital thermometer was giving me lower more erratic reads than this one. Also, this one reads your temperature in much greater detail than the digital one. Also glad to put an end to those annoying battery replacements (the worst was not knowing when the battery had run low, until the temperatures were horrendously low, so I lost a lot of time doing bad reads.) Even though this is for basal temps, I think this is a good component for any emergency medical kit. You never have to worry about batteries not being available in a crisis situation.
Cons:
Expensive, considering I and other people commenting here will need or want to buy more than one. You don't have to replace batteries, but you may have to deal with breakage

Loved it until it broke!
February 8, 2014
I used this thermometer to chart for 1.5 cycles. It broke halfway through this cycle. I really liked it because it doesn't beep and wake my husband up. The thermometer is a little wide at the bottom where it goes in your mouth making it a little awkward to take temp with. The thermometer cracked where it goes from being narrow to wide. I wish it was narrower.
Pros:
Quiet, accurate, mercury-free
Cons:
Broke after 40 days Width is cumbersome making it awkward to keep in mouth for 5 minutes

Great product
August 28, 2012
Great thermometer! Much more reliable then my past two digital ones! No battery to worry about. Super accurate!
Pros:
The magnifier.
Cons:
The pink holder is a little tricky due to the tabs used to hold the thermometer. Worried about jostling it too much and changing temp so just read the temp without putting it in holder.

Glass Basal Thermometer
August 20, 2012
A bit "bulky" in your mouth, you have to hold it in place. Takes longer to get a reading than digital. I think it is way more accurate than the digital I was using. The first couple of times I would first take my temp with the glass, and then with the digital, and I would get a higher reading on the glass every time. It's very easy to read even with out the magnifier sleeve it comes with. Seems difficult to shake down, but this is my first glass one I've ever had. Overall, I would recommend it. Getting an accurate reading outweighs any cons.
Pros:
accurate temp easy to read easy to use
Cons:
not as fast as a digital have to hold it in place while taking temp because of size

Works Perfectly and Easy to Read
April 17, 2012
I have used it for a year now and just had to buy a new one because I accidentally hit it on my phone when shaking it down. Luckily, the only thing to clean up was the glass. It's a reliable thermometer and easy to use.

Beware of very hot water
December 21, 2011
Here I am buying my second one. Mine just broke while rinsing it in very hot (scalding but not boiling) water. I was trying to sterilize it with the hot water and the silvery part cracked. I love that it's so accurate--I've gotten much better at detecting the day of ovulation as a result. I agree that it's a bit wide and not easily kept fully under the tongue-- I often have to hold it in place with my hand.

Excellent product
November 4, 2011
A few months after my second trimester miscarriage, I began using my one year old digital basal thermometer to chart my temps. After two months, I thought my thyroid was way off again, because my temps were all over the place. I've always been biphasic, even when my thyroid was low. So, I decided to buy this glass thermometer and I'm so glad I did. I used it, along with the digital thermometer and quickly learned that my digital thermometer's battery was dying. I then just used my glass thermometer and learned that my temps were staying up. My gums were also feeling painful even with regular flossing, so I took a pregnancy test on day 28 of my cycle. Sure enough, I learned I was pregnant. So excited and grateful!
Pros:
awesome magnifier to see the temps easily. very accurate
Cons:
having to wait five minutes for my temps, but it's so worth it to have an accurate temp. you can count on.

Mercury free and accurate
August 19, 2011
This is the second one I've owned. I love that it is mercury free and it's very easy to read. I take my temp at 5am, its even held the temp reading until the end of the day! I've been through 5 digital thermometers and I prefer this glass thermometer. It does take some extra shaking to get down for the next use, but a small price to pay and its accuracy are well worth the effort.

Much better than digital
July 3, 2011
I was using a digital thermometer to chart my basal body temperature and was getting really inconsistent temperatures. I bought this one because I've read that glass thermometers are more accurate. I haven't finished an entire cycle yet, but the temperatures I've been getting are much more consistent and in the correct range. I definitely recommend this over the digital thermometer i was using.
Pros:
More consistent and accurate temperatures than the digital thermometer
Cons:
It's a little difficult to read and you have to keep it in your mouth for a full five minutes to get an accurate reading (I think this is typical for glass thermometers though).

So far so good
May 12, 2011
Many reviews stated difficulties with shaking the thermometer down. I haven't experienced this so far. However, package says leave in mouth for 3 minutes, but if I leave in 5 minutes, my temperature gets even higher! Also, mine arrived with a big scratch on the glass which I wasn't pleased about.
Pros:
Seems accurate
Cons:
Takes a full five minutes to get a read

Very clear basal thermometer
May 11, 2011
I like this thermometer. I wanted a non-digital thermometer, and this one is very clear. I have been charting for a while, and this one works well. I keep having to buy them again because I break them because it is glass, but that is my problem, not a problem with the thermometer -- Note to self -- do not shake it down in the bathroom where it can hit the sink. Good case to hold it safely, and it is very clear and easy to read.

WRONG PRODUCT
March 13, 2011
Actually, I am definitely not trying to get pregnant!! I'm 75 :). I was looking for a good basal thermometer to take my underarm basal temp for checking thyroid. This product sounded good because it didn't contain mercury, and had large numbers (& magnifier)...but it didn't go low enough. I couldn't get a reading, so had to use a different thermometer as the temp was 95.4. Sorry...I gave it 3 stars because although it didn't work for me, and didn't have low enough scale, I'm sure it is a good product.
Pros:
No mercury - and magnifier/easy to read
Cons:
Temp scale didn't go low enough to measure thyroid temp.

Seems pretty accurate
March 10, 2011
My partner and I are just starting to use the FAM method to avoid pregnancy, we wanted to make sure we got a very accurate thermometer. So far it seems to be very accurate and consistent, so I am happy with it. I have used electronic thermometers in the past that give me inconsistent results, which is really frustrating! I think that it is worth the extra 3 minutes or so to know you are getting an accurate and consistent reading.
Pros:
Accurate and consistent Easy to read Simple, no battery to worry about
Cons:
Shaking down the non-mercury filler I am sometimes afraid I will break it

This is a great thermometer. It is easy to read.
Pros:
Easy to read. Mercury free.
Cons:
As with all traditional thermometers, it's slower than the digital so I end up using my digital a lot more.

Excellent thermometer, very helpful in predicting fertility.
January 24, 2011
I purchased this thermometer in October. I was experiencing irregular cycles since I stopped taking birth control pills, so I had no idea when to expect ovulation. In fact, I went for such a long time without getting my period that I thought I must be pregnant... but every test was negative. So, I decided to learn about charting fertility signs. This thermometer was the perfect tool for me: safe and easy to use. I started taking my temp the morning after I received it and was able to accurately pinpoint ovulation, when it finally happened. Thanks to this quality product I was able to track my fertility, and became pregnant the second time I ovulated.
Pros:
Very easy to read. Nice that when I broke it, I didn't have to clean up a toxic mess.
Cons:
A little wider than I expected, but I think that's to accommodate the very easy to read number markings. It's glass, so through a little carelessness I managed to break mine, but I like it so much I'm buying another one.

January 7, 2011
Product seems to be working well, not as user friendly as a digital model, but does the job.
Pros:
That it is mercury free and easy to use.
Cons:
That I have to "shake down" every day after use.

Best Thermometer Yet
December 8, 2010
I've been required to take my temp for over a year now for my thyroid, and during that time went through about five different thermometers. The digital thermometers, while definitely more convenient because they beep to tell you when they've reached a final number, are not accurate. I could take my temperature three times in a row and get different values each time. The liquid thermometer is more accurate, and this one is great in that it is specifically for basal temperature, so the range is shorter and therefore the values are easier to read.
Pros:
Mercury free Accuracy
Cons:
You can't be absolutely certain when it's reached the final value (unless you keep it in for 15 minutes) Not as easy to read as a digital

Too large & awkward for me
November 2, 2010
I only tried this for 3 nights & gave up.. Went back to the digital. It was too large and awkward to keep in my mouth without holding it and took such a long time to wait for the reading. I'm sure it's very accurate but for me, not worth the inconvenience.

Accurate. Does the trick!
September 21, 2010
This thermometer is easy to read and use. Shake it down below 97 with just five strong shakes. Takes about two minutes to reach your temperature. It is the best I've used yet (I found the battery operated ones consistantly reading my temp too low). Only improvement I would ask for is for it to be more comfortable under the tongue. I've never found one that is. That is a developement that would make it perfect
Pros:
Easy and accurate
Cons:
uncomfortable under the tongue

Worked great for three weeks
February 17, 2009
I really enjoyed this thermometer for the first three weeks. Then inexplicably, the substance inside separated into sections and it was impossible to shake down. I hadn't done anything unusual with it to cause this - just had taken my temp that morning and placed it on the counter like I usually do. About mid-afternoon I was going to shake it down and put it back by my bed when I noticed it's state. I've since thrown it away because I couldn't get it back to normal.
